AFRICA’S YOUTH REVOLUTION: GOVERNANCE, DEVELOPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY
A summary of discussions with Lennon Monyae from the African Peer Review Mechanism on Tek4Peace Africa YouTube Channel
Africa is a continent rich with potential, largely driven by its vibrant and dynamic youth population. Despite this promise, challenges such as poor governance, economic instability, and corruption have impeded progress. In our latest Tek4Peace Africa YouTube episode, we had the pleasure of hosting Lennon Monyae, a representative from the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) based in South Africa. Lennon shared valuable insights on how African youth can influence the continent’s future through active governance participation and the strategic use of technology.

The Need for Transformative Leadership
Our discussion began with a consensus: Africa has the capacity to unlock its potential, but it urgently needs transformative leadership. Such leaders should possess a deep understanding of both global dynamics and the specific needs of Africa’s population.
Lennon pointed out that while corruption and economic struggles are global issues, their effects are exacerbated in Africa due to structural challenges. Poor governance directly impacts economic development, often resulting in inadequate public services, limited job opportunities, and a lower quality of life.
“Africa’s youth are far from passive,” Lennon asserted, highlighting that Generation Z is actively shaping the political landscape and demanding accountability. Recent protests across the continent have underscored their determination to drive change. However, he cautioned that relying solely on protests without engaging in constructive dialogue might trap the continent in a cycle of instability. Lennon also noted, “We have a governance challenge on the continent. Some issues are structural and will take generations to address, but corruption can be tackled more immediately.”
Lennon’s call for visionary leadership extends beyond fighting corruption. It’s about nurturing leaders who understand and respond to the aspirations of all Africans, especially the youth, to forge a future with abundant and accessible opportunities.
The Role of African Youth in Governance
A major issue discussed was the disconnect between youth activism and formal political participation. Lennon observed, “Young people are not showing up to vote. They’re active in protests and online platforms, but when it comes to formal voting and leadership roles, they’re often absent.” This lack of participation undermines their potential influence on governance and policymaking. He urged young people to become more involved in formal political processes, such as voting and running for office, to ensure their voices are heard where it matters most.
Technology as a Tool for Change
In today’s digital era, technology plays a crucial role in governance and development. African youth are increasingly using digital platforms to mobilize, advocate, and demand accountability. However, Lennon warned of challenges like the spread of disinformation. “We are embracing technology perhaps more than other regions… but we must ensure we are equipped with the skills and knowledge to use it effectively.” He believes that with proper digital and media literacy and, critical thinking skills, technology can significantly advance various fields.
Opportunities within the African Union
Lennon also highlighted opportunities within the African Union (AU) framework that are available to young Africans. Through his work with the APRM, he has witnessed the AU’s efforts to engage more directly with the public. A key initiative is the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to increase intra-African trade—a crucial move given that intra-African trade has historically been low compared to regions like Europe. The AfCFTA has the potential to create jobs, reduce poverty, and spur economic growth, offering significant benefits to young entrepreneurs and women.
Empowering the Future
Africa’s youth hold the key to unlocking the continent’s vast potential. To realize this potential, it is essential for young Africans to actively shape their future. Here’s how you can get involved:
- Vote and Participate in Governance: Engage in local and national elections, support candidates who align with your values, and advocate for youth-friendly policies.
- Leverage Technology: Use digital platforms to raise awareness, mobilize peers, and hold leaders accountable. Stay informed and critical of the information you encounter.
- Explore AU Opportunities: Look into programs and initiatives by the African Union, such as the AfCFTA, which offer valuable opportunities for growth and impact.
- Advocate for Change: Propose practical solutions to issues in your community and engage in dialogues with policymakers.
- Educate and Mobilize Others: Share your knowledge and opportunities with others to bridge information gaps and encourage broader youth engagement.

Africa’s youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the leaders of today. By engaging in governance, harnessing technology, and taking advantage of AU opportunities, they can drive the continent toward a future of prosperity, stability, and inclusivity.
